Fair Trade Fortnight in coming…

Fair Trade Fortnight is coming this May 4 – May 19 (with World Fair Trade Day being held on May 11).

Everybody has the right to the dignity of a fair days pay for a fair days work in order to afford the basic necessities of life. Everybody also has the right to a safe and respectful working environment. Tragedies like the Bangladesh factory collapse last week happen all TOO often. Be a conscious consumer and know where your hard earned dollars go to.

RECYCLED GLASS BEADS:
These Fair Trade, eco-friendly and sustainable recycled glass beads (also known as Krobo beads or trade beads) are handmade by co-op’s promoting the advancement of African artisans in a socially responsible manner.
Discarded glass bottles are collected and then ground into a fine powder. The glass powder is placed into clay molds and fired in a kiln made from ant/termite hills. Once fired, the beads are then polished by sand and stone and then either sold as loose beads or crafted into stunning jewellery.

I recent years, Kenya has been devastated by drought. The livelihood of the Maasai tribes people, traditionally cattle herders, has been tremendously affected. Witnessing the desolation brought upon their neighbours, the enterprising Leakey’s started working with the Maasai to provide them a supplementary income. This collaboration was the birth of Zulugrass, an ‘Eco Chic’ range of jewellery and accessories based upon traditional Maasai craftsmanship for the broader western market.
